Odyssey of Mystery & Wonder: Detail

At some point it seems, we realize that our life’s journey is what facilitates the “deconstruction” of the mental constructs that we have long held about ourselves – it creates a shift in our perception in terms of who we believed ourselves to be so that we might discover the truth about who we truly are. This constitutes a “movement” away from identification with form (the roles we play, the work that we do, our attachments, our likes and dislikes…) to the formless aspect of our being. We discover something deeper and more intimate about our own nature and begin to see that we cannot ultimately be defined by that which is ever-changing. But rather, we are that which is immutable, even amidst the seemingly chaotic world. And the deeper we delve into this discovery, the more connected we feel to ourselves, to those around us, to humanity as a whole, and ultimately to the movement of life itself.

Nature also helps to put us in accord with this deeper, fundamental aspect of ourselves. We begin to see that the boundaries that we once felt defined us begin to abate. And we find ourselves experiencing a true sense of oneness with the natural world -- with the trees, the rocks, the water and sky – and all the creatures that dwell there. All the while sensing that we are connected to all of it. To everything in the manifested world -- the animate and the inanimate. Ah, the mystery and wonder of it all!

On A Night Like This: Detail

Rousing the senses and stirring our imagination, how effortlessly the night sky fills us with a sense of wonder and awe. While fostering a profound sense of presence, it puts us in accord with the very essence of who we are…connecting us to the eternal, immutable aspect of our true nature; our pure essence as love and light.

Here, we understand that we are not separate from, but rather an indispensable and indivisible part of, the One Great Mystery. Such is the Grace that the night sky bestows upon us. And oh, how blessed are we to be alive On A Night Like This…!

Visual art, like music, is a unique form of communication in that it provides a ‘vocabulary’ if you will, to articulate the musings of the soul. This work ‘speaks’ to the truth that everything in the manifested world is truly the One Great Mystery revealing itself in form. And how imperative it is to seek out our own ‘sacred spaces’ in an effort to discover the truth of who and what we are. Those places that support and foster the exploration of the more subtle realms of our spiritual nature so we may recognize our ultimate nature as limitless love.

This painting is symbolic of the infinite ways that nature functions as source of illumination on the path to enlightenment. When we immerse ourselves in nature and allow mind to fall silent, we recognize that there is absolutely no separation between a single aspect of the natural world and ourselves. Imagine how the world would change if we all recognized this truth! Ilumina!

This piece was inspired by a profound mystical experience that I had while canoeing/camping on Obabika Lake in the Temagami Region of Northeastern Ontario, Canada..It is a sacred, powerful place and is part of the Nastawgan, the traditional travel routes created in the region by the Anishinaabeg and used for thousands of years.

This painting was inspired by my time spent on the beautiful, rugged Slate Islands on Lake Superior this past August. There are a couple of places where the movement of the water from the big lake meets with the slower moving water in the inner channels and creates a unique 'disturbance' on the surface of the water. This meeting of the waters produces an effect that looks like the water is 'dancing' -- even 'hopping' at times. It was especially apparent when the winds were calm and there was no larger wave action. I am delighted with how this piece came together...it communicates an experience that I could not adequately express with words.

Mazinaubikiniguning
('The Adorned Rock on Agawa' ~ Anishinabae)
Picture
63.5" x 33.5" Framed
Acrylic on Gallery Wood Panel (NFS)

This piece was inspired by the many visits that Mark and I have made to Mazinaubikiniguning -- a sacred Indigenous site on Agawa Bay. The pictographs found here were painted by the Anishinabek in red ochre on white crystalline granite cliffs overlooking Lake Superior. This place is one of incredible beauty, power, and for me, personal healing. Canadian folksinger, Ian Tamblyn, once said to us, 'You haven't experienced the pictographs until you've seen them from a canoe.' He was so right! And in fact, some of the rock paintings can only be seen from the water.

Passionate Resistance ~ Wolf Lake
Picture
26"  x 14.5" Framed
Acrylic on Gallery Wood Panel

Passionate Resistance
Earth will, by Her very nature, strive for balance by changing and adapting to whatever conditions arise from the impact of human ignorance and arrogance. We do not have the power to destroy Her but we do have the power to render her unable -- even unwilling -- to sustain countless more species, ourselves included. The further we have ventured away from own True Nature, the more menacing we have become toward the natural environment. The streams, rivers, lakes and oceans all flow like the blood coursing through our own veins, connecting and supplying the whole.

The vibrant colours and 'movement' in this piece represent Mother Earth’s aliveness and her passionate resistance to the devastating impact of our unconscionable acts. How long will She choose to endure our negligence? It is time to heed the prophetic words of Chief Seattle who warned, if we '…contaminate our own bed we will, one night, suffocate in our own waste.'

This piece was part of a larger project to protect the Wolf Lake region northwest of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Please join together as 'pARTners for Wolf Lake' in an ongoing commitment to protect the Wolf Lake Old Growth Forest Reserve and demand that our inherent rights-based, justice-based action to protect Wolf Lake be heeded by prohibiting further exploitation through mining within this magnificent region. It is our responsibility today to protect Wolf Lake and the whole Chiniguchi Waterway for the generations of tomorrow.
